Harold Janeway was born in 1936 and raised in Londonderry, Vermont.
In 1958, after graduating from Yale with a B.A. in American Studies, Harold married Elizabeth (Betsy) Chanler, whom he had met skiing in Vermont. He served two subsequent years as an officer in the Navy aboard the USS Roy O. Hale, a radar picket ship operating in the North Atlantic.

Following his service at sea, he moved to New York with his family, where he spent 18 years working as a securities analyst and later director of research and investment policy for White, Weld and Co., an investment banking and brokerage firm. He is a chartered financial analyst. He has always been an active member of his community; in Bedford, NY, as a member of the Town Conservation Commission he helped establish an early recycling program in the mid-1970s.
In 1978, Harold and his family realized their dream of living closer to the land, moving to an historic farm in Webster. Shortly after relocating to New Hampshire, he founded White Mountain Investment. Based in Concord, the firm provided investment management services to individuals and non-profit organizations. He retired in 2006 to run for State Senate.
Harold has served several of the state’s leading non-profit institutions as a board member and chair, including the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests and the Nature Conservancy. He is currently a member of the board of trustees at the New Hampshire Retirement System.
Harold continues his responsibilities as town moderator in Webster, a position he has held for 17 years.
Betsy is a watercolor artist. She and Harold are active outdoorsmen and part time farmers. They have five grown children and eight grandchildren.
